Stache of Licks

Stache of Licks - Major Pentatonic

Whether you’re new to the Pentatonic scale or already ripping it up in a cover band at your local bar, melodic soloing and convincing improvisation requires two things. First, a bag of licks to draw from. Second, knowledge of how to solo over chord changes. Stache of licks Major teaches you just that! Best part, knowledge of complicated theory is not required to get started right away.

Major pentatonic is a tricky beast to master. Many of us spent years learning all sorts of minor pentatonic licks only to have the rude awakening that you can’t play major pentatonic licks in the same way. Fear not, with a couple quick tweaks of your perspective on the major pentatonic scale, you’ll be on your way. The secret lies in your ability to recognize chord tones within the scale. Once you can see those, you can play just as easily in major pentatonic as you do in minor. Although how you play the licks might be different, the principals are the same.

Stache of Licks Major starts by teaching you the major pentatonic scale in all 5 positions. Then, you’ll get to build up your familiarity with each spot by learning 5 licks in each position and a series off licks chaining the positions together. After building on your new skill set of soloing all over the neck; you’ll take the next crucial step of adding feel to your licks. Adding feel is how we connect emotionally with our audience while playing. You do this by learning different techniques like bending, vibrato, and varying things like timing and dynamics. Once you start doing this, it won’t matter if you can play fast or not because you will sound like a seasoned player regardless.

Finally tying it all together, you’ll apply your new found skills to music. This is where rubber meets the road in guitar playing. I’ll walk you through playing over both a verse and chorus, spotting the chord tones in each, and how to add emotion to your phrasing. Combining all these skills is what will truly take you to that next level.

Stache of Licks Major will give you everything you need to know to be off and running on your journey down the path to melodic soloing. It is the perfect companion to the Blues Soloing Secrets and Stache of Licks series.
